Dog Wash Depot Grooming Academy

My name is Scott Turansky and I am the owner of Dog Wash Depot. I started this business for my daughters Megan and Elizabeth in 2013 as a place where they could flourish in their grooming business. I know what makes a grooming business successful, and you’ll see that throughout our program, and even now as you get to know us and explore the possibility of being one of our students.

I designed our Grooming Academy with my daughter Megan who is a gifted instructor. Her eyes light up as she trains and mentors others. You’ll see that we have designed this program to stand out among grooming schools in the following ways. First of all, in your three months of training, you’ll receive over 200 hours of hands on training with dogs. We want you to feel comfortable and confident with dogs as you develop expertise in grooming.

Unlike any other schools, we allow you to earn back part of your tuition by receiving the actual grooming commissions from the dogs you work on. These commissions increase through three stages. In Stage 1 you receive no commissions, Stage 2, 1/2 of the commission, and in Stage 3, all of the commission unless the instructor has to take over or repair your work. These commissions are considered tuition refunds, and at no time during the training, is the student and employee of Dog Wash Depot.

We believe that mentorship is the best way to learn. Not only will you receive video instruction, write responses to those videos, and have a lot of discussion with your instructor, but you’ll learn many other things in our shop that will equip you to be a good groomer. You’ll learn how to do customer service, work with our iPad-based scheduling system, and clean and maintain the shop along with the rest of the groomers and bathers.

You’ll see how our pets are lovingly cared for, why our customers are happy, and why students are eager to come to our school. We want you to have the confidence you need to excel in the pet grooming field.

When you’re ready to apply, please email Scott Turansky and request an application. I’ll send it to you.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Description of the Program
Students will learn the skills necessary to be a pet groomer in a hands-on environment. The DWD Grooming Academy program is an apprenticeship program and is designed to develop quality styling skills for each student. The student will have the skills necessary to enter the job market as a pet groomer in salons, veterinarian clinics, mobile grooming, and kennels, or to open their own business. The student will learn the job skills listed in each subject that will develop a strong foundation. The program is divided into three stages and usually takes three months to complete.

Program Objectives
The Dog Wash Depot Grooming Academy program purpose is to equip the students with a strong foundation of grooming and bathing skills. Quality training will enable the student to have a career in the dog grooming and bathing profession. This program not only allows for you to develop grooming and bathing skills but also to understand how to apply them to breed designs and individual customer requests. Our goal is to provide you with an environment of professionalism and varied experience so that you can learn how to meet and exceed client expectations. You will learn what makes a groomer successful in the pet care field.

Program Schedule and Requirements
The Dog Wash Depot Grooming Academy Program is divided into three stages. Each of three stages will involve hands on experience, watching videos and writing short written responses of what’s learned, along with dialogue with an instructor

During each stage you will work on dogs from real customers. In Stage 1 you will receive no commissions for dogs completed. In Stage 2, you will receive 1⁄2 of the commission normally allotted to the groomer, and in Stage 3, you will receive all of the commission allotted to the groomer. Exceptions to this take place when the instructor must do more than just provide advice. The fees will go to the student as a tuition refund, not as employee compensation. Since this is not employee compensation, no taxes will be taken out of that commission. It’s considered a tuition refund and will state so on the check.

In Stage 1 you’ll have an introduction, learn about safety, equipment, customer service, different breeds, bathing, and basic cutting, scissoring, and clipping techniques.

In Stage 2 you’ll learn specialty cuts, more about a dog’s health, anatomy, and special care. You’ll be expected to add 5 before-and-after pictures to your portfolio demonstrating proficiency with those grooms.

In Stage 3 you’ll learn finishing technique, increase your speed, quality, and efficiency, and have opportunity to interact with customers. You’ll also be expected to add 10 more before-and- after pictures to your portfolio demonstrating your ability and skill.

Your Portfolio
During your work you will create a Styling Portfolio containing before and after pictures of the dogs you groom. There must be a minimum of 15 before and after photos of dogs. The portfolio can be used to show prospective employers your work or used as a breed "look book" for your future clients. It also shows your proficiency in dog grooming.

Graduation
A Master Groomer Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the Dog Wash Depot Grooming Academy Program. After graduation there is no guarantee of employment at Dog Wash Depot.
